Kuala lumpur: Malaysia has officially announced its candidacy for re-election to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for the 2027-2030 term. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil made this announcement during a leaders’ talk session at the World Summit on the Information Society+20 High-Level Event (WSIS+20).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi underscored Malaysia’s active role within the ITU. The country has been involved in Partner2Connect pledges, chaired ITU Study Groups, and hosted capacity-building programs. “Accordingly, we are seeking re-election to the ITU Council for 2027-2030. Our goal is clear: to help build a more connected, informed, and inclusive global society,” said Fahmi. He reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to working with partners to enhance digital inclusion and resilience, ensuring no one is left behind in the digital age.
Malaysia is currently a member of the ITU Council for the 2023-2026 term. This position allows the country to contribute to shaping the ITU’s strategic policy direction and to represent the interests of the Asia region in advancing telecommunications and digital infrastructure.
The ITU is the United Nations specialized agency for telecommunications and digital technology, responsible for allocating radio frequency spectrum, developing international standards to ensure network interoperability, and working to close digital divides worldwide.
