Malaysia and Kyrgyz Republic Forge Partnership in Islamic Banking and Halal Trade

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia and the Kyrgyz Republic have agreed to work together in developing Islamic banking and boosting trade in halal products, with Malaysia offering its expertise in both sectors to help develop relevant facilities and services in the Kyrgyz Republic. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced these developments following his meeting with President Sadyr Zhaparov, where both leaders discussed the establishment of Islamic banks to create improved financial systems.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, during a joint press conference at Seri Perdana, Anwar stated, “Of course, we discussed the issue of Islamic banking, halal, construction, financial arrangements and programmes, including the setting up of Islamic banks.” He further mentioned that follow-up meetings by respective ministers would ensure a better understanding and friendship, and secure the continuation of bilateral programs and trade investments.

In addition to banking and trade, Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, highlighted the agreement to explore the halal cooperation action plan proposed by Zhaparov. He expressed interest in Kyrgyz Republic’s capacity in hydropower, green energy, and renewable energy, which make up nearly 90 percent of the country’s electricity production. Malaysia is keen to understand and benefit from these resources.

Moreover, the two countries are set to enhance collaboration in education and research, aiming to strengthen people-to-people ties and expand both social and economic potential. Anwar announced that Malaysia will extend technical and educational assistance to the Kyrgyz Republic through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP), welcoming Kyrgyz participation in training exchanges.

The partnership marks a significant step in fostering collaboration between Malaysia and the Kyrgyz Republic, with promising prospects in banking, trade, energy, and education sectors.
