KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the necessity of building a robust digital ecosystem to propel Malaysia toward high-income nation status, highlighting the establishment of the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO) as a pivotal step in this direction.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar, speaking at the launch of the NAIO, stated that becoming a high-income nation is contingent upon the effective use of digital technology. Reflecting on his past tenure as Minister of Finance, he remarked that what was once merely an initiative is now a critical requirement for national empowerment. The Prime Minister underscored Malaysia’s pioneering role in establishing a Digital Ministry, which he believes is crucial for the country’s success.
Describing the NAIO’s establishment as a historic milestone, Anwar affirmed it as evidence of Malaysia’s resolve and commitment to digital transformation, aspiring to elevate the nation to the status of an innovative country. He stressed
the importance of starting with improving digital literacy across all societal segments, from foundational education to universities and public services.
Anwar pointed out that adopting digital literacy can lead to a paradigm shift in national management and help eliminate bureaucratic hurdles, particularly in public services. He highlighted the necessity of transitioning from outdated frameworks to embrace systemic change, which is essential for involving large companies and encouraging smaller enterprises like SMEs and MSMEs to integrate digital solutions.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister expressed his ambition to train 50,000 students in artificial intelligence, programming, and data analysis through the MyMahir platform by the end of 2025. Anwar emphasized the significance of nurturing the capabilities of local youth to shape the country’s AI values and ethics, ensuring that AI development reflects the Malaysian identity rather than relying solely on external influences.
