Kuala lumpur: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is projecting a return to pre-pandemic passenger levels, targeting 62 million movements by the end of the year. This ambitious goal is fueled by a series of strategic upgrades and service transformations, notably at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Group Managing Director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani highlighted the positive growth trajectory during a recent media briefing about MAHB’s strategic direction. He emphasized that the company has shifted towards a more agile and customer-focused model, abandoning old bureaucratic methods to prioritize speed and service excellence.
Under Mohd Izani’s leadership since August last year, MAHB has been undergoing a transformation anchored on three pillars: service excellence, growth, and capacity enhancement. Efforts have included 14 facility upgrades at KLIA Terminal 1 during the first half of 2025, which have significantly increased throughput by 40 percent at a cost of approximately RM30 million.
The group’s focus on regional competitiveness is evident, as it aims to strengthen its position in the regional travel segment rather than competing directly with larger hubs like Changi or Suvarnabhumi. Mohd Izani noted that collaboration with airlines has improved, enhancing long-term route development and maintaining a performance-driven approach.
In terms of operational enhancements, MAHB is exploring seamless passenger transfers between KLIA Terminals 1 and 2, with proof-of-concept trials underway. Furthermore, recent operational hiccups, such as the brief aerotrain disruption due to rainwater accumulation, have been promptly addressed with engineering improvements.
Looking ahead to Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and the Asian Games in 2027, MAHB is planning new passenger experiences, including Project Rimba, which will feature a revitalized indoor forest at the airport.
The privatisation of MAHB, with Khazanah Nasional, the Employees Provident Fund, and Global Infrastructure Partners as key stakeholders, has facilitated faster decision-making. Mohd Izani expressed optimism about the transformation journey, stating that the company is assembling the right team and partnerships to elevate Malaysia Airports to the next level.
