Kampar: A lorry driver has been fined RM300 for obstructing a Fire and Rescue Department vehicle responding to an emergency along Jalan Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur, despite its siren being activated. Kampar police chief Supt Mohamad Nazri Daud confirmed that the summons was issued following a viral video showing the fire truck struggling to overtake the lorry, which failed to give way.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the incident raised public concerns about the safety and priority given to emergency vehicles during critical operations. Police identified the driver after a probe conducted by the Kampar district police headquarters (IPD). Initial investigations revealed that the driver claimed ignorance of the fire truck’s siren due to the loud engine noise and fully closed windows, which muffled the sound.
The summons was issued under Section 9(2) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 (LN166/59) for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. Mohamad Nazri emphasized the legal obligation for road users to give way to emergency vehicles such as ambulances, police cars, and fire engines when their sirens or warning lights are activated. He warned that non-compliance not only breaches the law but can also delay rescue efforts and endanger lives.
