KPWKM To Conduct Study On Need To Amend Domestic Violence Act

Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) will conduct a study on the need for amendments to the Domestic Violence Act, following a recent rise in reported cases. Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri emphasized the importance of ensuring that any proposed amendments do not conflict with existing laws.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nancy Shukri stated that while the Act is not under KPWKM, the ministry will work closely with relevant parties to provide crucial input in meetings to ensure effective action. She made these remarks during a press conference after inaugurating the 'Zero Tolerance of Violence: Say No to Sexual Harassment' program.

Nancy highlighted the necessity for amendments due to an increase in domestic violence cases, reportedly reaching around 4,000 cases daily. She also addressed an incident in Kelantan involving a woman who was stabbed, affirming the ministry's commitment to collaborating with the police for necessary reports.

The minister explained that in cases of violence against women, the Social Welfare Department would deploy protection officers to provide essential assistance to victims. The officers' reports will serve as the main reference for police action. Nancy noted that despite ongoing advocacy programs, such cases persist, underscoring the need for coordinated action with law enforcement.

In addition to legal measures, Nancy assured that the ministry would facilitate counseling services to support victims' emotional recovery.
