BATU GAJAH: The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) is poised to determine the best strategies to address the flooding that submerged Arena Kepayang Putra, Fair Park near Ipoh, with water levels reaching 1.5 metres today. Minister Nga Kor Ming stated that the ministry is pending a comprehensive report on the incident and will thoroughly analyze the issue to prevent future occurrences.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nga emphasized that such flooding had not occurred previously, prompting him to instruct the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and the Ipoh City Council to compile a detailed report on the causes of the flood. This is aimed at implementing preventive measures. He noted that over 13 hours of continuous rainfall last night contributed to the situation and urged the public to adopt precautionary measures in response to ongoing climate change challenges.
Nga, who also serves as the Kepayang assemblyman, remarked that the flooding was unexpected, marking the first such incident f
or residents in 28 years. Earlier media reports quoted local fire and rescue officials who said that over 114 flood victims had been evacuated by 5.30 pm.
As of 8 pm, the number of evacuees has increased to 130 from 36 families, currently housed in 10 relief centres across the districts of Hilir Perak, Kinta, Kampar, as well as Larut, Matang, and Selama.
