Taiping: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) of Perak raided two entertainment centres in Taiping yesterday for allegedly infringing copyright by using unauthorised copies of film, sound, and song recordings for commercial purposes. Its director, Datuk Kamalludin Ismail, stated that the raid was conducted at 2.30 pm following complaints from representatives of the copyright owners.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, investigations revealed that both premises were utilizing karaoke systems containing infringing copies of film, sound, and song recordings for business purposes without the copyright owners' permission. All karaoke sets, monitors, and documents have been seized for further investigation, with the total value of the seizure from the two premises estimated at RM56,235.
Kamalludin further mentioned that the owners of the two premises failed to provide any licence or authorisation documents for the film works claimed by the copyright owners. Consequently, the premises are suspected of violating the Copyright Act 1987 for possessing, keeping, or controlling infringing copies for purposes other than private and domestic use.
