Taiping: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) of Perak conducted a raid on two entertainment centres in Taiping for allegedly using unauthorised copies of film, sound, and song recordings for commercial purposes, in violation of copyright laws.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the raid was carried out at 2.30 pm following complaints from representatives of the copyright owners. The investigations revealed that both establishments were operating karaoke systems containing infringing copies of film, sound, and song recordings without obtaining permission from the copyright holders.
The authorities seized all karaoke sets, monitors, and documents from the premises for further examination, with the total value of the seizure estimated at RM56,235. The owners of the two establishments were unable to provide any licence or authorisation documents for the film works as claimed by the copyright owners.
The premises are suspected of breaching the Copyright Act 1987 for possessing, keeping, or controlling infringing copies for purposes other than private and domestic use, as stated by Datuk Kamalludin Ismail, the director of KPDN Perak.
