KPDN Encourages Haj Scam Victims to Seek Redress Through Consumer Tribunal

Kuala Lumpur: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has called on victims of fraudulent haj packages to file complaints with the Tribunal for Consumer Claims (TTPM) to pursue appropriate compensation. Deputy Minister Dr. Fuziah Salleh emphasized the importance of affected individuals coming forward, as the ministry has yet to receive any official complaints regarding these scams.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Fuziah highlighted that some victims might be unaware of their rights and stressed that through TTPM, they could file claims up to RM50,000. She noted that many victims mistakenly believe that lodging a police report is sufficient, and she urged them to also report the issue to TTPM. These comments were made during the launch of the Enforcement and Consumer Advocacy Programme.

Complaints can be submitted at any KPDN branch nationwide or filed online. Johor KPDN director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo and state chief enforcement officer Mohd Fuzi Hadi Abd Latif were also present at the event.

Dr. Fuziah further explained that TTPM would evaluate each case based on the details provided, including the amount paid, promises made, and the actual services received. She advised consumers to remain cautious and to file complaints if their rights have been violated.

Recently, reports emerged about 47 Malaysians allegedly being scammed by a local haj agent, involving a well-known religious figure. The victims were reportedly led through dangerous routes without proper documentation after arriving in Jeddah, due to strict enforcement by Saudi authorities against pilgrims without haj visas. Police have since detained two individuals with the title ‘ustaz’ to assist in the investigation.
