Ketum Leaf Users Can Be Sent To Rehab Even If Not Addicted – AADK

Kuala lumpur: The National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) has been granted the authority to mandate rehabilitation for ketum leaf users, even if they do not exhibit signs of addiction.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, AADK director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh shared that this directive follows the passage of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) (Amendment) Bill 2024 by the Dewan Rakyat last year. Ruslin explained that the agency’s newfound power allows them to direct individuals to treatment if they test positive for ketum leaf use, regardless of addiction status.

Ruslin further clarified that the same measures apply to users of other illicit substances, such as ecstasy. He emphasized that even if an individual uses drugs infrequently, they can still face action under the Drug Dependants Act if detected.

The director-general also highlighted the government’s encouragement of voluntary treatment for drug abusers as a supportive step in their recovery journey. This approach, he noted, underscores the government’s commitment to addressing substance abuse with a more inclusive and progressive rehabilitation framework.

The Dewan Rakyat’s approval of the bill in July last year is seen as a significant step towards regulating and enhancing the management of private drug rehabilitation centres in Malaysia. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail pointed out that the original Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983 lacked provisions for registering private rehabilitation facilities.
