Kelantan KPDN Enhances Oversight to Combat Egg Price Manipulation

Kelantan: The Kelantan branch of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) will bolster its enforcement efforts under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011. This move aims to prevent traders from manipulating egg prices following the removal of the egg subsidy, effective from August 1. Azman Ismail, the director of the Kelantan KPDN, emphasized the department’s ongoing commitment to inspecting supermarkets and retail stores to ensure fair pricing practices.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Azman Ismail noted that current monitoring indicates a stable egg supply in Kelantan, with no signs of shortages. To further protect consumers, initiatives such as the Jualan Rahmah program will continue to be implemented, ensuring eggs remain affordable and reasonably priced for consumers.

The backdrop to this intensified scrutiny is the recent announcement by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. He outlined that the reduction of the egg subsidy from 10 sen to five sen per egg, effective from May 1, is projected to save the government RM135 million over a three-month period. This financial adjustment precedes the complete lifting of price controls on eggs, anticipated to occur on August 1.
