Kota bharu: Activities linked to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community in Kelantan remain under control due to consistent enforcement, strong religious values, and close community vigilance. State Local Government, Housing, Health and Environment Committee chairman Hilmi Abdullah emphasized the community’s alertness and willingness to report suspicious behaviour as key factors in maintaining this control. ‘In Kelantan, if something seems unusual, people report it quickly to the authorities,’ he told Bernama today.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Hilmi Abdullah highlighted that formerly problematic areas, such as Jalan Hamzah and Lorong Limau Manis, have seen significant improvements. He cited the development of a shopping centre in Jalan Hamzah as an example of efforts to curb immoral activities. ‘The transformation reflects the state’s ongoing commitment to moral governance,’ he stated, adding that the Kota Bharu Municipal Council – Islamic City (MPKB-BRI) continues regular monitoring of such areas.
Hilmi noted that there have been no recent reports of immoral activity, although he acknowledged that any remaining incidents may involve foreigners or non-locals. On July 17, Bernama reported that Kelantan police raided a private LGBT-related gathering involving over 20 men at a bungalow in Jalan Kemumin, following public complaints and intelligence gathered by a special task force.
