Kampung huma: Residents of Kampung Huma, Tanjung Dawai, are urging the authorities to take immediate action to address the worsening coastal erosion, which is feared to pose a risk to their safety.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Salmah Abdul Rahman, 73, who has been living in the village for over 40 years, explained that the plot of land behind her house was once open space used for farming. She used to grow various crops, but in recent years, the sea has been rising and is now perilously close to her home. Salmah mentioned that big waves bring water and sand into her house, requiring her constant vigilance, especially at night, to prevent water pooling.
Rosminah Ahmad, 53, who lives with her elderly mother, expressed her concerns about the sea encroaching dangerously close to their home. She noted that the worst erosion occurred last Sunday, with the sea now just two to three meters away. Rosminah hopes for the construction of a concrete retaining wall to protect their home from further erosion.
Suhaida Abu Hasan, 44, shared that the coastal erosion has become increasingly severe, recalling that her sister-in-law had to vacate her home after part of it collapsed due to big waves last year. Suhaida emphasized the urgency of constructing a retaining wall to ensure the safety of the community.
Ahmad Fauzi Othman, the Kampung Sungai Pial Village Head Council (MKK), highlighted that about 30 houses are at risk from the coastal erosion. He noted that the situation has worsened over the past few months, affecting many vulnerable residents. Although a 60-meter concrete wall was built recently, it only provided partial protection, leaving many houses still exposed to the threat.
The Kedah Fire and Rescue Department has advised coastal residents to stay alert following reports of large waves. A viral video showing waves striking close to homes has intensified public concern. Authorities are urged to act swiftly to prevent potential incidents, especially with the monsoon season approaching.
