Johor bahru: The Johor government plans to propose additional pick-up and drop-off points for cross-border taxi services between Malaysia and Singapore. State Transport, Infrastructure, and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh stated that Malaysian licensed taxis and hire cars are currently limited to dropping passengers at Rochor Road in Singapore. Conversely, the only drop-off point for Singapore taxis is Larkin Sentral in Johor Bahru.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the first phase of the proposal includes adding five more locations in Singapore, with Singapore also expected to have five additional drop-off points in Johor. This was announced by Mohamad Fazli after the launch of the Mahkota Rail Square, officiated by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, at Kluang Station. The second phase may involve allowing some vehicles to provide limited door-to-door services, a matter that is still under discussion and includes considerations for e-hailing platforms.
The proposal comes amidst claims by more than 400 travel agencies in Johor that their businesses have suffered after Singapore ceased accepting Vehicle Entry Permit applications in 2023. A representative from a tourism agency, Dr. Khairul Anuar Mohtar, 37, noted that revenues have decreased by more than half due to the rule, which prevents tour vehicles from entering Singapore.
