Johor: Campaigning for the 16th Johor State Election has entered its second week, with the two main political coalitions, Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN), intensifying their efforts to secure votes by employing unique strategies and strengths. According to BERNAMA News Agency, PH and BN are both fielding candidates in all 56 state seats, but they are taking different approaches with their campaigns. PH is focusing on policy agendas that directly address the everyday concerns of the electorate, such as cost of living, affordable housing, and income growth. Meanwhile, BN is utilizing its strong party network and the involvement of high-profile political figures to boost its campaign momentum. Dr. Mohammad Tawfik Yaakub, a political analyst from Universiti Malaya, explained that PH aims to persuade voters through policy offerings that highlight tangible benefits like better wages and quality employment opportunities. PH has outlined a comprehensive action plan in its manifesto, "Johor For All," which focuses on strategies to improve the welfare and quality of life for the people of Johor. On the other hand, BN is capitalizing on the return of prominent political figures like former UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein and former UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin. Their participation is seen as a means to reconnect with traditional supporters and younger voters who may be disillusioned with the party. The presence of these figures seems to be a strategic move for BN, particularly with Khairy's popularity among younger voters, which could prove advantageous in reaching a demographic that has become less loyal to any single party. Ilham Centre chief researcher Assoc Prof Dr. Mohd Yusry Ibrahim noted that young voters are more drawn to recognizable public figures, making the choice of candidates crucial in influencing their voting decisions. The Johor state election will see 172 candidates competing for 56 seats, with polling scheduled for Saturday, July 11, and early voting on Ju ly 7.
