Melaka: The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) is prepared to collaborate with the Islamic religious authorities in Melaka to assist in reviewing and verifying calligraphy in mosques and surau within the state. This initiative comes in response to claims of spelling errors in the Kufic script for the word ‘Allah’.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar stated that the effort aims to ensure that every calligraphy featuring the holy word displayed in mosques and surau is accurate and aligns with Islamic teachings. He noted that the State Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs Committee chairman, Datuk Rahmad Mariman, has already instructed all mosques and surau in the state to review their existing calligraphy.
Mohd Na’im affirmed JAKIM’s readiness to cooperate with the Melaka Islamic Religious Department and the Melaka Islamic Religious Council in this matter. He emphasized the importance for mosque and surau committees nationwide to assess any decorative calligraphy to ensure it complies with syariah requirements.
He also acknowledged the community’s concern about the issue and encouraged that any corrections be made in a prudent and constructive manner. Mohd Na’im expressed gratitude to the community for their vigilance and assured that any inaccuracies in the calligraphy would be addressed.
This response follows reports that the Melaka government is investigating allegations of errors in the Kufic script for the word ‘Allah’ at a local mosque. The issue was initially highlighted by a social media influencer, prompting various reactions from the public.
