Kuala Lumpur: The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has engaged in discussions with tech giant Intel concerning its plans to reinvest and expand its operations in Malaysia, as announced by Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Intel has already invested RM50 billion and created employment opportunities for 12,300 local workers. Zafrul highlighted that Intel’s presence in Malaysia, established in 1972, has paralleled the country’s growth as a global semiconductor hub. “This meeting reflects Intel’s continued confidence in Malaysia as its key investment destination outside the United States,” he noted on social media platform X.
Furthermore, the Malaysian government, through MITI and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), remains dedicated to supporting Intel’s expansion efforts. “Under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP2030) and the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), we will continue to strengthen a sustainable and competitive industrial ecosystem,” added Zafrul.
In another development, Zafrul announced that Vishay Intertechnology, a U.S.-based manufacturer of discrete semiconductors and passive electronic components, has shown interest in expanding its operations in Malaysia. Vishay already has a presence in Melaka, and the increase in high-tech semiconductor facilities aligns with the objectives of NIMP2030 and NSS.
The announcement follows Tengku Zafrul’s working visit to Washington, United States, from June 18-20.
