Incidents of Roaming Livestock Causing Significant Losses for KTMB

Kuala lumpur: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) is facing an estimated loss of RM100,000 a year due to incidents of livestock collisions on the tracks, which not only damage assets but also disrupt the smooth running of train operations on the East Coast. KTMB's operation control acting general manager, Sadun Abdullah, noted that the incidents have been detrimental to both the company and livestock farmers, whose animals have been killed in these accidents.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sadun highlighted that incidents involving livestock roaming along the Gemas-Tumpat route have been reported almost weekly, with a noticeable increase in recent times. He emphasized that obstacles on the track severely impact travel schedules, operational safety, and service quality. As a result, KTMB is appealing for cooperation from livestock farmers to prevent their animals from wandering near the train tracks.

To combat the issue, KTMB has implemented several strategies, including providing advisory services to farmers, conducting safety campaigns, and holding meetings with village heads in the affected areas. Sadun also mentioned that KTMB is expanding public awareness efforts by distributing safety leaflets to nearby suraus and mosques to educate local residents on the importance of keeping livestock away from train tracks.
