Harimau Malaya Ready to Challenge Vietnam’s Dominance in Asian Cup Qualifiers

Kuala Lumpur: The head-to-head record may favor Vietnam, but Harimau Malaya head coach Peter Cklamovski believes his team is prepared to defy the odds when they meet Vietnam in their second Group F match of the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil. Malaysia last triumphed over Vietnam in a 4-2 victory during the semi-finals of the 2014 AFF Cup in Hanoi. Since that victory, Malaysia has faced Vietnam eight times, resulting in seven losses and one draw.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Cklamovski feels confident about Malaysia’s chances, citing two crucial factors: the inclusion of seven new heritage players and a comprehensive training camp that prepared the team for this critical match. The Australian coach believes the combination of heritage players with local and naturalized players will strengthen Harimau Malaya’s defense, enhance creativity in midfield, and add potency to the attack.

The heritage players include strikers Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, and Joao Figueiredo; defenders Jon Irazabal, Facundo Garces, and Gabriel Palmero; and midfielder Hector Hevel. Cklamovski expressed satisfaction with the team’s dedication during the centralized training camp that began on May 19, emphasizing the players’ improved understanding of his football philosophy.

Vietnam and Malaysia currently sit at the top of Group F, each having secured three points from their opening matches. Despite Vietnam’s historical advantage, Cklamovski sees it as a challenge that his players are eager to embrace. “Instead of being fearful of that record, it’s a challenge that the players and all the staff in our environment want to embrace,” he stated at a pre-match press conference.

National team captain Matthew Davies echoed the sentiment, asserting that Malaysia’s focus will be on their collective performance rather than individual efforts, especially in light of Vietnam missing key attackers Nguyen Cong Phuong and Nguyen Xuan Son. Davies emphasized the importance of concentrating on the team’s overall strategy rather than Vietnam’s strengths, expressing confidence in their preparation for the match.
