Selangor: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh urged more National Sports Associations (NSA) nationwide to come forward and organise sports training clinics to develop the capacity of local athletes and coaches. She said that the organisation of such clinics, which are supported by funding, has already started for several sports and its reach will continue to be expanded.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) has provided funding for these clinics, but it has not been widely publicised. The initiative has already commenced with sports like sepak takraw and wushu, and there are plans to secure the same funding for the upcoming year to extend benefits to other sports. Hannah Yeoh made these remarks at a press conference during a squash clinic organised by Supreme Squash Club, a local squash sports club in Selangor.
The event featured former Australian squash legend, David Palmer, who facilitated a four-day squash clinic aimed at supporting the development of squash in Malaysia, particularly among local coaches and players. Hannah noted that bringing international sports experts into the country is an effective strategy to enhance the skill level of athletes and coaches, especially for those who do not have the opportunity to train abroad.
Meanwhile, addressing the fatal accident involving a participant in a cycling event on Jalan Kuala Muda, Langkawi, Hannah confirmed that the event was sanctioned by KBS. The matter has been fully handed over to the authorities for investigation.
