Labuan: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh has undertaken her first official working visit to Labuan since assuming the Federal Territories portfolio on Dec 16, 2025, with a focus on reviewing the implementation of development projects that directly impact the daily lives of the island's residents.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the visit prioritised key basic needs, including solid waste management, water supply stability, and efforts to strengthen sustainable local economic development. During her visit, Hannah had coordination meetings with Labuan Corporation's top management to assess the status of ongoing projects, identify implementation challenges, and enhance follow-up coordination between federal and local agencies. She also engaged with Labuan's tourism industry players to explore opportunities to strengthen the island's regional tourism potential.
As part of a ground-level, implementation-based approach, Hannah inspected the progress of three key projects. These included the construction of a new sanitary landfill cell and the upgrading of the leachate treatment plant at the Kampung Bukit Kalam landfill site, Labuan's only waste disposal facility, with a focus on meeting project timelines and ensuring public health and environmental safety. She mentioned that Labuan Corporation, together with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, will be working to conduct a study on effective and cost-efficient waste disposal methods.
Additionally, she visited a proposed RM11 million eco-tourism and public recreation project along the Nagalang coastal road, which aims to boost Labuan's tourism sector and create economic opportunities for local communities through sustainable tourism activities. Moreover, she assessed the proposed RM2.5 million water storage tank project at the Taman Mutiara and LDA Sungai Bedaun housing areas, which aims to increase water storage capacity and strengthen Labuan's water supply system, especially during disruptions or periods of high demand.
Hannah emphasized that basic issues such as stable water supply, safe waste management, and local economic opportunities directly affect people's daily lives and will continue to be prioritized in development planning and implementation on the island. She was accompanied by Labuan MP Datuk Indera Dr Suhaili Abdul Rahman, Labuan Corporation chairman Datuk Mohd Husni Mohamad Salleh, and senior officials from the Federal Territories Department, Labuan Corporation, and related government agencies.
