Greenwater Project Drives Water Conservation In Eight Schools In Penang

Kuala Lumpur: Lam Research has stepped up its water conservation efforts in schools through the launch of the Greenwater Project, in collaboration with Water Watch Penang. Lam Manufacturing Malaysia general manager Lee Eng Keat said the project was aimed at instilling sustainable water management practices among students and teachers in schools across Penang.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the project involved eight selected schools, where sustainable systems were installed to harvest rainwater and collect condensation from air-conditioning systems. Lee emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing water resource pressures, particularly in states like Penang. He expressed pride in working with Water Watch Penang on the Greenwater Project, which focuses on educating students about water conservation and installing rainwater harvesting systems.

The ceremony, held at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tinggi Bukit Mertajam, was officiated by Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) chief executive officer Datuk K. Pathmanathan and attended by Water Watch Penang president Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Chan Ngai Weng. Lee highlighted the project’s potential to save about 500,000 litres of water annually, reducing dependence on treated water for non-potable use by at least five per cent.

Lee also noted that his team had enhanced the existing rainwater harvesting system to align with Lam’s global target of saving 80 million gallons of water by the end of the year, since the project’s initiation in 2019. Meanwhile, Pathmanathan praised the commitment of Lam Research and Water Watch Penang in supporting the state’s efforts to secure a reliable water supply. He stressed the importance of such proactive initiatives by industry and non-governmental organizations in alleviating pressure on water resources and ensuring a sustainable future for Penang.
