Govt Seeks Support from Opposition for PM Tenure Limitation Bill

Kuala lumpur: The government is optimistic that the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, designed to cap the prime minister's term, will garner backing from opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) when it is reintroduced in the Dewan Rakyat this June.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said emphasized the necessity of opposition support, as a two-thirds majority is essential for passing a constitutional amendment. She highlighted the importance of MPs recognizing the benefits of limiting the prime minister's tenure, which the government views as advantageous for the nation and its citizens.

Azalina expressed hopes that the opposition would also perceive the initiative as a measure to limit power rather than extending it. She reiterated that no alterations have been made to the bill's content, and the re-tabling aims to achieve the necessary two-thirds majority support.

The bill proposes a 10-year term limit and is a component of the institutional reform agenda led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a separate announcement, Azalina revealed that the ministry intends to inaugurate the Anti-Bullying Tribunal, complete with court facilities and a hotline, on June 16.
