Govt Prioritizes Development of Skilled Talent in Technology for Budget 2026

Kuala lumpur: The government will give priority to efforts to produce new, highly skilled talents in the latest technology fields through Budget 2026, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar, who is also the Minister of Finance, stated that focus would be given particularly to the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and upstream semiconductors, which are now urgent needs of the high-tech industry.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized that this initiative is one of the government’s priorities in the upcoming budget. He noted the importance of evaluating past achievements and identifying necessary support to enhance training and well-being programs aimed at elevating the capabilities of the younger generation. This announcement was made during the opening of the 9th International Conference on Social Sciences and Humanities (ICOSH).

Anwar highlighted the significance of this effort in supporting large investments by international companies, such as Infineon Technologies, which are investing in Kulim and Melaka. This underscores the need for Malaysia to provide a skilled workforce trained in engineering and AI.

The Prime Minister further elaborated that the government plans to allocate additional funds to accelerate training programs and develop new talent skills in AI, digital technology, and engineering. He stressed the importance of producing well-trained individuals who can meet the demands of companies investing in the region.

He also pointed out the necessity of strengthening the synergy between academia and industry, moving beyond traditional academic approaches. Anwar called for a new, faster approach in the approval process for programs and allocations at higher education institutions, highlighting the need to overcome bureaucratic hurdles.

Reflecting on past challenges, he mentioned a proposal made over two years ago to establish an AI Faculty swiftly, which was initially hindered by bureaucratic processes. He expressed appreciation to universities and the Ministry of Higher Education for expediting the establishment of the AI Faculty, thus facilitating the approval of new programs more efficiently.
