Government Upholds Halal Standards, Eases Meat Imports from US

Kuala lumpur: The government remains firm on halal standards while facilitating the import of meat and poultry products into Malaysia by recognising halal certificates from United States (US) certification bodies, said the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, these certificates must comply with the standards set by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), as MITI aims to streamline the process of importing US goods into the country. The ministry highlighted that the commitments agreed upon in negotiations offer an opportunity for the government to review outdated, overlapping, or irrelevant policies, processes, and procedures, paving the way for improvements in business operations.

MITI stated, “These improvements will enhance the ease of doing business, productivity, and innovation, making Malaysia more competitive and a prime investment destination in the region.” The statement was part of a written parliamentary reply addressing a query from Senator Datuk Dr Mohd Hatta Ramli regarding MITI’s plans to safeguard Malaysia’s interests in tariff negotiations with the US.

The ministry is currently engaged in discussions with the US administration to finalise the agreement document to be signed by both countries. Additionally, MITI will continue to monitor developments and the implementation of reciprocal tariffs, while devising strategies to mitigate impacts on local industries. The aim is to ensure national economic stability and the well-being of the populace are preserved.
