Putrajaya: The government will roll out a pilot project to strengthen language skills among young people, in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's call to nurture a multilingual generation. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said the initiative aims to create more weekend activities for youths growing up in Putrajaya, supporting language learning through practical and informal engagement.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the programme is a response to the Prime Minister's challenge for young people to be fluent in Malay, English, Mandarin, Tamil, or Arabic. Hannah Yeoh emphasized that language mastery requires opportunities to practice, as classroom learning alone is insufficient. This was conveyed to reporters after she officiated the Putrajaya Open Day 2026.
To implement the plan, the minister's team is drafting proposals for free language classes enabling young people to learn and practice openly. Continuous exposure is recognized as key to achieving proficiency. Discussions are underway to provide free classes where anyone interested can participate to learn or practice languages.
Hannah Yeoh also mentioned that retired teachers with language expertise might be invited to volunteer, offering flexible one- to two-hour sessions to help youths practice consistently. Alongside language classes, the team is planning free sports classes, such as aerobics and skipping, at selected locations in Putrajaya to address rising obesity rates among young people.
Pilot locations will be identified before expanding the programme, focusing on family well-being and community needs, particularly among civil servants who face challenges in spending time with their children. Further details will be announced once discussions are finalized.
