Government Supports NGO-Led Cleanliness Initiatives in Federal Territories

Kuala Lumpur: The government has announced its readiness to allocate funds to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and associations interested in organizing activities under the ‘Bersih Semua Tempat’ (BeST) programme within the Federal Territories. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, emphasized the initiative’s aim to promote cleanliness and integrate a clean environment into the daily lives of residents in these areas.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Zaliha revealed that the government has provisions at the Federal Territories level to support the BeST initiative. The primary goal is to implement it at the community level by encouraging NGOs to collaborate as strategic partners. A specific budget has been allocated to facilitate their involvement. She shared these details with reporters after launching the BeST programme simultaneously across the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan.

Dr. Zaliha highlighted that the BeST programme’s implementation aligns with efforts to promote the Federal Territories as clean and sustainable cities. This initiative is also part of building a positive image for the country ahead of the 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship and the Visit Malaysia Year 2026. In conjunction with these efforts, she launched the Federal Territories Flag Flying Campaign, distributing 72,000 Federal Territories flags of various sizes across Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan.

Additionally, in a Facebook post, Dr. Zaliha mentioned conducting a survey in Bukit Bintang, where she instructed Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr. Maimunah Mohd Sharif to address damaged dustbins and drain covers. She also advocated for efforts to beautify hoardings in development areas to enhance the city’s visual appeal.

Dr. Zaliha further discussed a collaboration with SWCorp to involve the productive homeless group in garbage collection in Kuala Lumpur. This initiative aims to provide them with income based on the amount of garbage collected, contributing to achieving zero waste and supporting the Waste to Wealth initiative. She also urged traders in Bukit Bintang to maintain the cleanliness of their business premises and called on DBKL to continuously monitor cleanliness aspects in the area.
