Government Honors Late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as Father of Human Capital Development

Bertam: The initiative to organise the Remembering Statesman Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi: Father of Human Capital Development Programme today reflects the government’s deep appreciation for the service and contribution of the late Tun Abdullah, the country’s fifth Prime Minister. Tun Abdullah’s younger brother, Datuk Mohd Tahir, said his family thanked the government for organising the programme, adding that it would provide exposure to the people, especially the younger generation, about his brother, affectionately known as ‘Pak Lah’.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohd Tahir expressed gratitude and emotion regarding the tribute. He remarked on how the event offers an opportunity for the public, particularly the youth, to learn about Pak Lah, who showcased leadership qualities early on, including leading various associations such as the Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (GPMS) during his university days. Pak Lah was well-regarded in his hometown of Permatang Bertam for his approachability and community involvement.

The programme was officiated by Minister of National Unity Datuk Seri Aaron Ago Dagang in Bertam and attended by Deputy Minister K. Saraswathy. Organised by the National Archives of Malaysia, the event is part of the 2025 National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations (HKHM 2025).

Mohd Tahir also highlighted his late brother’s focus on human capital development, a cornerstone of his strategy as prime minister from 2003 to 2009. Despite his relatively brief tenure as prime minister, Tun Abdullah made significant contributions to the nation, emphasizing the importance of enhancing the capabilities of Malaysians irrespective of race or religion.

Tun Abdullah passed away at the age of 85 at the National Heart Institute (IJN) on April 14. Born on November 26, 1939, in Bayan Lepas, Penang, he served as the Kepala Batas MP from 1978 to 2013 and as Malaysia’s Prime Minister from October 31, 2003, to April 3, 2009, succeeding Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
