Gig Workers Bill 2025 Set for Crucial Second Reading in Dewan Rakyat

Kuala lumpur: The Gig Workers Bill 2025, designed to provide protection and formally recognize the role of gig workers, is scheduled for its second reading in the Dewan Rakyat tomorrow, announced Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. Despite calls from some parties to delay the tabling, the government is determined to move forward with the Bill to protect the welfare of approximately 1.2 million gig workers across the nation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sim emphasized the importance of advancing the legislation, stating that waiting any longer would not be beneficial. He remarked on the lengthy process leading to this stage and asserted that the government’s readiness should not be stalled. Sim stressed that the Bill is focused on the welfare of the people rather than political interests, urging gig workers to lend their support.

The announcement came after Sim received a memorandum from the Land Public Transport Transformation Association (TPAD) at the Parliament building. TPAD president M Nathan, along with about 150 members, gathered to show their support for the legislation, which had its first reading in the Dewan Rakyat earlier in the week.

The Gig Workers Bill 2025 is expected to mandate platform providers to deduct Social Security Organisation (Socso) contributions from each transaction of gig workers’ earnings. It will also establish clear terms in service agreements to ensure the protection of workers’ rights. Sim highlighted the necessity of this law to uphold gig workers’ welfare, irrespective of future government compositions.

Additionally, the memorandum from TPAD called for the establishment of a floor price for the e-hailing and p-hailing sectors, aiming to further safeguard the interests of workers in these industries.
