Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has hailed the Gig Workers Bill 2025, recently passed in the Dewan Rakyat, as a significant achievement for the youth and all Malaysians engaged in the gig sector.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Bill introduces a clearer framework for the gig industry, offering recognition, robust social networks, and a promising outlook for the future. Anwar addressed claims of the government’s slow action in tabling the Bill, emphasizing that the thoughtful implementation takes into account the lives of millions.
Anwar stated that the effort of every gig worker is dignified, contributing significantly to strengthening both the people and the nation’s economy. The Bill, he noted, represents a victory for gig workers, aligning with the spirit of independence by addressing their demands and reducing pressures, despite the legislative process’s complexity.
While acknowledging objections, Anwar expressed gratitude that the Bill not only addresses the fate of gig workers, including e-hailing drivers and food delivery workers, but also aims to resolve several raised issues. He reassured that the Bill provides social security, leave, Perkeso contributions, and insurance protection-benefits previously overlooked by critics.
The Gig Workers Bill 2025 assures income stability, dignity, recognition, and ultimately, a guarantee of comfort for workers in this sector and their families. Anwar also appreciated Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong, his ministry, and governmental partners for supporting and implementing the aspirations of the people, especially gig workers.
As reported by Bernama, the Bill provides specific guidelines to protect gig workers while balancing the interests of digital platform providers. It also establishes the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission as an independent regulatory body to ensure effective enforcement of the law.
