FRIM and Perlis Forestry Department Collaborate to Enhance Economic Potential of Teak

Teak eco park: The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) and the Perlis State Forestry Department (JPNPs) have reinforced their partnership to enhance the economic potential of Perlis teak. This initiative aims to stimulate community economic development through the creation of downstream products.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, FRIM director-general Datuk Dr Ismail Parlan highlighted that products derived from teak plantations contribute to environmental sustainability. This effort aligns with the designation of FRIM’s Mata Ayer Research Station as a biological site within the Perlis Geopark. He emphasized FRIM’s dedication to promoting Perlis teak both locally and internationally, organizing programs with state agencies, associations, and local entrepreneurs to maximize the economic value of teak plantations.

Dr Ismail spoke at the launch of the ‘Pasar Geowarisan Se-Jati 2025’ at Teak Eco Park, officiated by the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail. He noted that since its establishment in 1974, the station has focused on research and development of forest plantations, particularly teak. FRIM and JPNPs have rebranded the station as Teak Eco Park to support state efforts in promoting ecotourism, transforming it into a teak reference center and eco-attraction in Perlis.

FRIM is committed to enhancing the branding of teak-based products and building a strong market reputation. Initiatives such as the ‘Royal Perlis Jati Craft’ and the pursuit of Geographical Indication status are anticipated to boost the value and marketability of Perlis teak products. The ‘Pasar Geowarisan Se-Jati 2025’ is part of these ongoing efforts and has been included in the 2025 State Tourism Calendar. The program aims to raise awareness and garner support from stakeholders to realize the potential of teak-based crafts and ecotourism.
