Barcelona: The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), a humanitarian convoy en route to Gaza, reportedly encountered multiple drones while navigating the waters off Barcelona, Spain, sparking fresh concerns over the safety of its mission.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the origin of the drones could not be determined, heightening concerns among participants over the security of the mission. In addition to safety worries, the flotilla also encountered thunderstorms, resulting in delays to its scheduled destination.
“Currently, they have not made a decision to turn back. They are monitoring the weather, and if conditions improve, they will proceed with the journey,” she told Bernama.
The humanitarian flotilla, comprising 24 vessels, departed the Port of Barcelona for Gaza on Sept 1, carrying more than 1,000 international participants from 44 countries, including 15 representatives from Malaysia. It is understood that the next phase of the mission will see a second group of 15 Malaysian delegates depart from an Italian port on Sept 4, joining international participants en route to Gaza. This departure will coincide with the mobilisation of a third Malaysian group currently stationed in Tunisia.
The GSF unites an international coalition spanning Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East, with all participating delegations upholding the principle of non-violence. They view the flotilla not only as a humanitarian mission but also as a powerful symbol of global solidarity with the people of Gaza.
