Kuala lumpur: Malaysia Aviation Group’s (MAG) regional airline, Firefly, plans to move its jet operations from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1, starting on August 19, 2025. Firefly will maintain its turboprop services from SZB, known as Subang Airport, ensuring continued connectivity to crucial regional destinations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Firefly will initiate jet services from KLIA on August 19 with its inaugural flight to Tawau, followed by a phased introduction to significant domestic and regional locations. Services to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu will begin on August 21, Singapore on August 22, Johor Bahru on August 23, Kota Bharu and Terengganu on August 30, and Sibu on September 3.
The airline also plans to enhance existing services from KLIA to Penang, increasing from twice weekly to six times weekly starting August 23, with a further rise to ten times weekly in November 2025. The group assures that passengers affected by the transition will receive direct communication regarding alternative travel arrangements or full refunds, in compliance with the Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code 2016.
This strategic shift is part of MAG’s long-term network optimisation strategy aimed at improving operational efficiency and ensuring sustainable operations for Firefly’s jet services. MAG group managing director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail stated that the relocation to KLIA allows Firefly to expand its jet operations more effectively, enhance passenger connectivity, and better utilise MAG’s shared capabilities in engineering, ground handling, and catering.
SZB will continue to serve an important role in Firefly’s network through its turboprop operations, which provide essential connectivity across key domestic and regional routes. The decision highlights MAG’s dedication to bolstering KLIA as the primary aviation hub while maintaining accessible air travel options nationwide.
