Kuala lumpur: The MyDigital ID registration system at kiosks will be upgraded with facial biometric verification as part of efforts to strengthen identity security and prevent misuse, the National Security Council (NSC) said. In a statement today, the NSC announced that real-time facial biometric verification against the National Registration Department's database will be conducted during the registration process.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, this measure aims to improve the accuracy of identity verification while reducing the risk of identity misuse and unauthorized access. Existing users will be informed of the need to undergo periodic facial biometric re-verification as part of ongoing efforts to ensure the integrity and security of their digital identities are continuously safeguarded.
The security enhancements will be rolled out in phases at all MyDigital ID kiosks, with maintenance work scheduled from 6 am today until 6 am on June 14. During the kiosk upgrade period, MyDigital ID registration can still be completed via mobile phones by downloading the MyDigital ID application from the App Store, Google Play, or Huawei AppGallery.
The increasing use of digital services by the public, businesses, and government agencies has underscored the critical need to protect digital identities amid threats such as online fraud, identity impersonation, data theft, and cyber exploitation. In this context, MyDigital ID plays a key role in the national digital identity ecosystem by enabling more secure and trusted identity verification across various public and private sector digital services.
The NSC will also continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to coordinate security enhancement measures across various identity and identity verification platforms, including MyKad, to ensure that citizens' digital identities remain protected.
