Lahad Datu: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) detained two foreigners and thwarted an attempt to smuggle cigarettes valued at RM871,854.40, after tax, in an operation on the Kampung Bakau water village squatter colony here yesterday.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, ESSCOM Commander DCP Datuk Victor Sanjos revealed that a total of 580,000 sticks of white cigarettes from various brands, alongside 440 small packets of tobacco, were confiscated during the operation, which was initiated based on a public tip-off.
The detained individuals, a woman and a man both hailing from the Philippines, are suspected to have been actively involved in the smuggling of untaxed cigarettes in the area. Additionally, ESSCOM seized a four-wheel-drive vehicle and three outboard motor boats worth approximately RM62,000.
“They were detained under Section 6 (1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, while the smuggling case is being investigated under Section 135(1) of the Customs Act 1967,” Datuk Victor stated in a formal announcement.
He further emphasized that ESSCOM is committed to continuously monitoring and enhancing special operations to mitigate any elements that may jeopardize the security, peace, and well-being of the public, particularly along Sabah’s east coast.
Datuk Victor also encouraged the public to cooperate by providing any information regarding suspicious activities or incidents directly to the ESSCOM Operations Centre at 089-863181 or via WhatsApp at 011-63311072.
