Emergence of ‘Piu Piu’ Drug Sparks Call for Immediate Vape Ban

Kuala lumpur: The emergence of "Piu Piu," a new synthetic drug detected in electronic cigarette liquids, has prompted calls for a complete ban on vaping devices in the country. Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay highlighted the urgent need for action due to the drug's severe intoxication effects, which leave users in a zombie-like state.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the drug is a mixture of fentanyl and psychoactive chemicals. Deputy IGP Ayob Khan emphasized that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is concerned that vape usage has strayed from its intended purpose and is being exploited by drug trafficking syndicates to avoid detection by authorities.

"The main issue at present is not whether vaping presents a business opportunity for certain groups, but that the device is being dangerously misused by mixing it with new drugs or New Psychoactive Substances (NPS)," he stated during a press conference. He further noted that vaping has become a status symbol among teenagers, necessitating early intervention to address the problem. Ayob Khan urged Malaysia to follow the example of other countries that have already banned vaping, calling for strong political will to tackle the issue.
