Kuala lumpur: The Enforcement, Leadership and Management University (ELMU) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) to strengthen efforts to produce ethical media practitioners with high integrity, particularly in crime news reporting.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, ELMU vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kassim Noor Mohamed emphasized that MPI has long stood as a pillar of quality journalism development in Malaysia. He noted that the university shares a similar mission to train a new generation of ethical and responsible media practitioners. Kassim highlighted the importance of combining academic rigor with real industry practices, particularly in crime news reporting, which significantly impacts society. He stressed that responsible crime reporting not only informs but also educates and empowers the community, requiring sensitivity, accuracy, and a strong commitment to ethical standards.
Kassim signed the MoU on behalf of ELMU, while MPI was represented by its president, Datuk Yong Soo Heong. Also present was MPI administrative council member Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, who is also the Bernama chief executive officer. Yong remarked that the MoU would usher in a new era in crime reporting, focusing not just on the act of reporting but on revitalizing the field with training and workshops designed to enhance journalists’ sensitivity, ethics, and insightfulness. He noted the opportunity to explore crime reporting as a specialized field with the combined expertise of both institutions, aiming to produce more robust and ethical news reporting.
Yong also expressed that MPI remains open to collaborations with various entities to further enhance the quality of journalism in Malaysia.
