Kuala lumpur: A total of 2,467 domestic violence cases were recorded across the nation from January to April this year. Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad highlighted that housewives were the group most affected by domestic violence incidents.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Noraini noted that many victims might not even realize they are being abused due to the nature of the abuse, which can be emotional as well as physical. She mentioned the possibility of perpetrators employing tactics such as reverse psychology. Studies have revealed that the perpetrators are often people closest to the victim, including family members.
Dr Noraini provided these insights during her address at the Women’s Wellbeing Advocacy Programme Domestic Violence (Aku Wanita KRT). She also disclosed that Terengganu recorded 104 cases of domestic violence from January to April, showing a decrease from 130 cases during the same period last year. However, she expressed concern over the persistence of such cases.
To combat the issue, the ministry has implemented several initiatives, including the Aku Wanita KRT Programme, which aims to engage the community in addressing domestic violence. This program facilitates discussions on domestic violence with experts and survivors, allowing victims who have successfully escaped abusive situations to share their recovery experiences.
Additionally, the program features a psychological intervention session called ‘K-Chat,’ which involves group interventions with trained counselors and facilitators. This session aims to help participants better understand and cope with issues arising from violence.
