Disaster Relief Efforts Intensify in Flood-hit Sarawak

Sarawak: All federal and state disaster relief assets have been mobilised to 13 flood-affected locations in Sarawak, where over 6,700 people have been impacted as of noon today. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that more than 50 relief centres have been activated to accommodate flood victims in the state.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) is coordinating with relevant parties, including the Ministry of Education, to identify additional schools and community halls in higher-ground areas that can serve as relief centres. The National Disaster Management Committee chairman mentioned the potential construction of Bailey bridges in areas where transport links have been disrupted. Discussions with the Royal Engineers Corps are underway regarding preparations for these bridges.

Ahmad Zahid also stated that an early warning system has been activated to provide at least three days’ notice before high tide events. This system aims to assist in the evacuation process and help residents secure important documents and belongings. The floods have been significant, with 13 meteorological stations recording daily rainfall averages exceeding 20 millimetres.

He reminded the public that the Northeast Monsoon season will persist until the end of March and urged all parties, particularly those in high-risk areas, to remain vigilant and prepared.
