Cycling Permitted on Malaysian Roads Unless Explicitly Banned: MNCF Clarifies

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) has clarified that cycling is permitted on public roads across Malaysia, except where explicitly prohibited by gazetted regulations or signage. This statement comes in response to a recent viral social media incident involving a dispute between cyclists and a bus driver.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MNCF President Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill emphasized the organization’s dedication to monitoring such incidents and reiterated the legality of cycling on Malaysian roads. In his statement, Amarjit urged law enforcement to investigate social media content that threatens or incites harm against cyclists, stressing that such behavior poses a danger to the cycling community.

Amarjit highlighted that cyclists have the right to be recognized as legitimate road users. He warned that any deliberate act of harm towards cyclists with motor vehicles could be prosecuted under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Safety remains a top priority for the MNCF, which advocates for adherence to traffic laws and personal safety measures during all cycling activities.

The MNCF president also advised cyclists to employ a defensive riding approach to reduce the risk of accidents, especially on routes frequented by heavy vehicles. He urged cyclists to refrain from aggressive behavior and to remain considerate towards other road users, promoting harmony and safety on the roads.
