CRESS Initiative Boosts Access to Green Electricity, Draws Investments to Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur: The Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS) is facilitating renewable energy generators and green electricity consumers to connect with the electricity supply grid, offering consumers more options for acquiring green energy. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof highlighted that this accessibility to green electricity is projected to attract green investments, focusing on environmental sustainability, which adds significant value to the nation and creates economic benefits.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fadillah, who also serves as the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, stated that implementing CRESS as a third-party access option allows corporate companies to directly obtain green electricity from renewable energy generators. He explained that from an economic perspective, CRESS provides new opportunities for consumers to access green electricity based on their preferences by opening up the electricity supply grid to renewable energy generators and consumers.

During a question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat, Fadillah was responding to Zahir Hassan (PH-Wangsa Maju) regarding the efficacy of CRESS as a third-party access model for energy procurement, particularly concerning economic advantages. Fadillah noted that the CRESS programme also offers a clear framework for green energy procurement, enabling corporate entities to meet their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments.

He further mentioned that two renewable energy generators, Tenaga Nasional Bhd and UEM Lestra Bhd, have successfully engaged in green electricity procurement agreements with consumers for an estimated 400 megawatts of renewable energy supply capacity under the CRESS programme. This initiative is expected to attract investments totaling RM1.2 billion.
