Creative Entrepreneurs Transform Abandoned Premises Into Thriving Businesses

Kuala lumpur: Amid the rise of towering cityscapes, abandoned and dilapidated buildings often sit forgotten-eyesores in the landscape and magnets for crime. In recent years, a growing wave of creative entrepreneurs has been breathing new life into neglected spaces, turning them into vibrant hotels, cafes, and event venues through adaptive reuse.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, this concept, long embraced abroad, involves repurposing abandoned buildings by preserving their original structure-transforming them into distinctive cafes, restaurants, or even hotels.

Muhammad Zairee Izwan Zahir is among those who have embraced this trend. He transformed four blocks of abandoned four-storey police quarters in Sungai Petani, Kedah into Zaque’s Hotel, a three-star establishment that has become a popular lodging option. The idea originated from his late father, Zahir Yahya, who saw potential in these dilapidated structures.

Initially, Zairee and his family were skeptical due to the buildings’ poor condition. However, his father used his skills and resources as a contractor to restore the premises, preserving its original form while creating a modern hotel. After Zahir Yahya’s passing, Zairee and his siblings took over, expanding the hotel’s services to include events such as weddings.

Zairee believes that old buildings can be valuable investments rather than being dismissed as worthless. He plans to continue enhancing the hotel, including the addition of a swimming pool to attract more guests.

Similarly, Mohd Shafiq Zolkipli saw potential in an old inherited house in Lenggeng, Negeri Sembilan. He transformed it into the do8camp cafe, offering a blend of traditional heritage and modern relaxation. Despite its rural location, the cafe has attracted a steady stream of customers, particularly bikers and cyclists.

Mohd Shafiq encourages others to consider repurposing abandoned properties, emphasizing that old structures can generate income if properly maintained. His venture demonstrates that with creativity and a smart approach, neglected spaces can become thriving businesses.
