Cooperation With National Parties Does Not Contradict PBS Principles, Says Dr Joachim

Kota kinabalu: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam has emphasized that the party's cooperation with national parties aligns with its principles and reflects the current political realities and interests of the people of Sabah.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Sabah Deputy Chief Minister stated that the collaboration between the Sabah state government, which includes PBS as a component, and the Federal Government is consistent with the spirit of unity and the constitutional relationship between the state and the federation. He clarified that this cooperation adheres to both the Sabah State Constitution and the Federal Constitution of Malaysia.

Dr Joachim made these remarks while officiating the 40th PBS Annual Delegates Conference, where PBS president Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili was also present. He addressed misconceptions about the slogan 'Sabah for Sabahans', asserting that it is not intended as anti-Malaya rhetoric or an effort to separate Sabah from Malaysia. Instead, it emphasizes ensuring Sabahans hold key positions in both state and federal governments, particularly in roles based in Sabah.

He further explained that the 'Rumah Kita, Kita Jaga' (Our Home, We Protect It) slogan, promoted by Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), a coalition that includes PBS, signifies a broader national unity. It highlights that Sabah's progress and stability contribute to Malaysia's overall well-being, asserting that Sabahans are Malaysians residing in Sabah.

Additionally, during a conversation with reporters, Dr Joachim expressed support for GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's perspective on potentially not contesting the upcoming Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections in January, as a measure to maintain state stability. The by-elections are scheduled following the death of the incumbent, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, with polling set for January 24, nomination day on January 10, and early voting on January 20.
