Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Communications is implementing a Music Industry Development Study to examine issues, challenges and proposed action plans towards empowering the sustainable and dynamic development of the Malaysian music industry. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the study is also refining business models, governance, staffing and specific laws that can support the development of the industry.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the minister stated that currently, there is no specific act for music, and the ministry is considering the best way to draft an act to ensure the welfare, sustainability, and development of the music industry. The study will include input from music industry players via the Music Industry Protem Committee.
The committee comprises 20 members from various fields, including composers, lyricists, recording companies, singers, musicians, and academicians. Fahmi mentioned that the study’s results would help determine the necessity of a specific body for regulating the music industry or integrating it into existing regulatory bodies.
Additionally, proposed amendments to the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia Act (Finas) 1981 are expected to be tabled in the upcoming Parliament meeting. These amendments aim to expand the scope of regulation, governance, and enforcement aspects of the act. Changes include refining membership criteria for Finas Corporation Members and redefining key terms to align with technological advancements.
Efforts to strengthen cooperation among ASEAN musicians will be highlighted during RIUH X ASEAN 2025, scheduled for this October alongside the 47th ASEAN Summit.
