Shah alam: The Ministry of Communications is committed to strengthening media understanding and digital literacy among students of public institutions of higher learning through the National Journalist Day (HAWANA) 2025 Roadshow with Polytechnic Students.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the HAWANA Secretariat, led by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and strategically partnered with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), organized the inaugural edition of the programme today at Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Polytechnic (PSA).
The event featured three knowledge-sharing sessions, starting with a talk on Mobile Journalism (MoJo) by Bernama News Officer Syed Iylia Hariz Al-Qadri Syed Izman. This was followed by an explanation on fact-checking by the editor of MyCheck Malaysia and Data Journalism Unit, Sakina Mohamed. The sessions concluded with a presentation on the ‘Safe Internet Campaign’ by MCMC’s Engagement and Administration Department head, Hanita Izam Abdul Rahman.
The tour programme was opened by Senior Secretary (Management) of the Ministry of Communications, Mazlan Abd Mutalib. It was also attended by Bernama Chief Executive Officer and Chairperson of the HAWANA 2025 Working Committee, Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin; Bernama Editor-in-Chief and HAWANA 2025 Project Director Arul Rajoo Durar Raj; and PSA Director Zainah Rujihan.
In a gesture of collaboration and support for educational institutions, the Ministry of Communications donated a smart television unit to selected polytechnics and community colleges, including PSA, Kuala Lumpur Metro Polytechnic (PMKL), Sultan Idris Shah Polytechnic (PSIS), Selangor Banting Polytechnic (PBS), and Shah Alam Community College (KKSA). This initiative is expected to benefit more than 600 students and lecturers.
To conclude the event, Bernama marked the National Month celebrations by flying the Jalur Gemilang and leading students and guests in singing the 2025 National Day and Malaysia Day theme song, ‘Malaysia Madani Rakyat Disantuni’.
The HAWANA 2025 Tour Programme builds on the success of the 2024 edition, which involved 16 public universities across six main zones nationwide. This year’s expansion to polytechnics reflects the government’s commitment to democratizing access to communication knowledge and fostering media awareness among students from various academic backgrounds.
