Kuala lumpur: Cloud seeding operations will be carried out to address the issue of dry padi fields caused by hot weather, stated Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. The decision comes after padi farmers in Kerian, Perak, expressed concerns over the receding water levels in Bukit Merah Lake due to prolonged dry conditions.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad Sabu mentioned that previous cloud seeding efforts have been undertaken and emphasized the continuing challenge posed by water reservoirs. A water transfer project is being planned in the Kerian Valley to address these water issues, extending also to South Seberang Perai.
The minister further detailed that a raw water distribution initiative from Sungai Perak to the Bukit Merah Dam is expected to commence in August, aiming to enhance water supply capacity for agricultural purposes in the Kerian area.
In another development, Mohamad highlighted that the increase in rice supply quotas to manufacturers will depend on each factory’s production capacity. This approach is particularly aimed at supporting Bumiputera-owned factories that demonstrate the capacity to contribute to the staple food production.
Last Wednesday, Perak Rural Development, Plantation, Agriculture and Food Industry Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun indicated that the state government plans to request an increase in rice supply quotas from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. This adjustment is intended to meet current demands and ensure the stability of the country’s food supply, fostering cooperation between large and small manufacturers to revitalize the rice industry.
