Kuala Perlis: The ‘choley’ service, a decorated three-wheeled motor vehicle, is set to expand its operations to areas surrounding the Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal. This initiative aims to fortify the tourism identity of Perlis.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the State Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Rural Development Committee chairman, Abu Bakar Hamzah, announced that this expansion aligns with the recommendation by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail. The goal is to establish the choley as a tourism trademark for the state, coinciding with Visit Perlis Year 2024-2025, which will extend to 2026.
Abu Bakar highlighted that while Melaka is renowned for its trishaws, Perlis aspires to spotlight the choley. The current fleet of 30 units in Kampung Warna Warni will increase to 100, strategically placed at locations like the Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal. He shared this development while observing the initial implementation of the service at the terminal.
The choley service is poised to offer a leisure transport option for tourists who arrive early or are waiting to board the ferry to Langkawi. The service will be synchronized with the ferry and roll-on, roll-off (roro) schedules, allowing tourists to experience the scenic views of Kuala Perlis, capture photographs, and sample local cuisine.
Abu Bakar assured that the committee would work with relevant agencies to ensure that the choley operations adhere to traffic regulations and do not disrupt traffic flow. The fare for a choley trip currently stands at RM35 in Kampung Warna Warni but may be slightly reduced to around RM30 in the Kuala Perlis town area due to the shorter route. He emphasized that the choley could stimulate the local economy and provide income opportunities for young people.
Each choley unit is designed to accommodate two to three adults or two adults with two children, depending on the passenger size.
