BN’s Manifesto for Johor Polls Praised for Realistic Approach and Governance Continuity

Johor bahru: Barisan Nasional's (BN) manifesto for the 16th Johor state election has been recognized for its strategic approach and emphasis on governance continuity, potentially bolstering voter confidence, including those undecided.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, political analyst Associate Professor Dr. Mazlan Ali from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) highlighted that the manifesto, comprising 63 pledges centered around the Maju Johor 2030 plan, targets three main groups: the B40 group, youths including university students, and urban and semi-urban residents. Mazlan emphasized that the manifesto builds on existing policies from BN's previous term, offering a sense of reliability and direction.

'Most of the initiatives outlined in the manifesto have already been introduced during the previous term, while the rest represent a continuation and enhancement of existing policies. This gives the public confidence that what is being promised is not merely an election pledge, but one backed by a proven track record of implementation and a clear direction should BN be given the mandate once again,' he told Bernama.

The manifesto, themed 'Maju Johor, Kestabilan Dikekalkan, Kemajuan Diteruskan', was launched last Friday, drawing from the coalition's governing experience and the state government's performance over the past four years. Of the 63 pledges, 11 key initiatives are prioritized to directly impact welfare, housing, employment, business, and education.

Mazlan noted that programs like strengthening the Bantuan Kasih Johor initiative, introducing housing assistance, creating job opportunities, and exempting business license fees could significantly benefit the targeted groups. He asserted that the manifesto is practical, given Johor's robust economic standing and ongoing investment inflows, ensuring the feasibility of delivering these pledges within five years.

Meanwhile, UTM's Nationhood and Social Well-being Research Group researcher Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Azhar Abd Hamid described BN's offering as a development-oriented manifesto, leveraging the coalition's previous administrative record. Mohd Azhar emphasized the coalition's focus on sustaining economic stability through initiatives that align with the Maju Johor 2030 agenda, addressing crucial economic concerns like employment and housing.

'Its main strength lies in its administrative track record and the previous term's report card. The primary focus is clearly on the economy because that is the people's bread-and-butter issue and the most pressing concern that needs to be addressed,' he said.

Mohd Azhar also suggested including Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for each initiative to allow the public to assess government performance effectively. While acknowledging that a manifesto isn't exhaustive, he recommended detailing annual targets, timelines, and monitoring mechanisms to enhance transparency.

Polling for the Johor state election is set for July 11, with early voting scheduled for July 7.
