Geneva: Big technology companies are not exempt from the laws of any country, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He emphasized that every sovereign nation has its own set of laws that serve multiple purposes and must be adhered to by all, including big tech companies. Fahmi made these remarks during a panel session at the World Summit on the Information Society+20 High-Level Event (WSIS+20) on Wednesday.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi highlighted that Malaysia has been proactive in developing the Guidelines for Safe and Responsible Use of Social Media Platforms for ASEAN. He described these guidelines as a potential “beacon in the dark” for ASEAN nations, designed to help them navigate safely while respecting their sovereignties and the principle of ASEAN centrality. Fahmi expressed hope that these efforts would amplify the voices of ASEAN countries.
Malaysia is spearheading the creation of these guidelines, which are envisioned as a non-binding regional reference. They aim to offer common principles, best practices, and practical recommendations for governments, platforms, and users. The goal is to address online safety and promote cyber wellness across ASEAN member states while fostering collaboration between ASEAN information sectors and social media platforms to tackle harmful online content, all while protecting freedom of expression.
